WBR Yamaha take the top two spots in the SX3 division at rounds four of the Australian Supercross Championship, held in Adelaide over the weekend.
With Kobe Drew on the side lines after a mid-week injury, The WBR Yamaha Team were down to three riders, but it proved to be a successful weekend for the team not only winning the round but all riders inside the top four.Kayd Kingsford picked up his first win for the year with an impressive performance in the two race finals format. Kingsford finished with 3-1 results across the two races to take the win and inject some life into his championship.
He didn’t finish the previous round in Wollongong due to a nasty fall, but he turned things around in Adelaide and proved to be fast and consistent in both races and just as importantly, stay out of trouble on the tight circuit.
“Its so good to finally win a round as I have been so close this year in both motocross and now supercross,” Kingsford begins. “I felt good on the bike and my starts were good today, so I was able to get myself in goods positions in each race.
“Thanks to the WBR Yamaha team for a big effort over the last few days and let’s take this form to Melbourne in a couple of weeks’ time.
Right next to him on the podium was teammate, Koby Hantis. Hantis has been the big improver in the short supercross season and has become a real threat for race and round wins as the championship has progressed.
He started the day in perfect fashion with a win in the first final and was in line for the round overall but dropped a couple of places last in race two to finish fourth. His 1-4 results left him two points short of Kingsford.
“I’m a little frustrated,” Hantis said. “I rode well in the first one and got the win but wasn’t able to get the job done in race two. The track was small, and it meant passes were aggressive and I lost two spots when I was passed in the second race.
“It's always good to be on the podium but I felt I let a round win slip away today,” Hantis said.
Just missing the podium was championship leader, Seth Burchell. Burchell finished with 5-2 results to take fourth on the night but was able to maintain his seven-point lead in the championship with one round to go.
Burchell was up front early in race one but was shuffled back quickly before steadying the ship late in the race and in the final moto, was aggressive as he moved his way forward in the later stages in race two.
The consistent night was just what he needed in the championship and will be looking for more of the same at the final round in Melbourne in two weeks’ time.
“I needed to get things back on track after a rough weekend at Wollongong,” Burchell said. “I let a few guys get by in race one that I shouldn’t have, so I had to make sure that didn’t happen again in race two.
“Even though it wasn’t a great night for the round, it was pretty good for the championship situation. There is still plenty of racing to come so I need to stay focused for the final round and make sure I bring home the championship for the WBR Yamaha team.”
