Kobe Drew and Seth Burchell stood on the MX3 podium for the WBR Yamaha Team at round six of the ProMX Championship at Toowoomba, while Koby Hantis continues to lead the championship with two rounds remaining.
Queenslander Kobe Drew made it a round to remember finishing second for the day but also claiming his first MX3 race win at the ProMX Championship. Drew finished fourth in the first moto in a solid start to the day, but it was race two where he really came alive and after pouncing on a mistake by race leader, Jake Cannon, Drew took control of the race and charged away for victory with team mate Seth Burchell in tow.
Drew then didn’t put a foot round in the closing stages and raised his fist in triumph as he crossed the finish line five seconds ahead of Burchell making it a team 1-2 in race three.
The points at tight at the top of the championship table with Drew in third place but only eleven points separate the top three in the title hunt.
“That has been a long time coming and I’m pumped to finally able to win one,” Drew said from the podium. “Jake had a bit of a lead on us, and I got past Seth the lap earlier, so when I saw Jake down, I knew I had to ride well for the last half to ensure I got the win and its good to be here on the podium.
“Thanks to everyone who came out today as I have a lot of friends and family here and also the WBR Yamaha team. We have four riders in the truck and its hectic in there at times, but we all keep at it and getting good results.”
For Burchell, it was his second podium result in three rounds, and he continues to climb up the championship charts after missing round one with an injury. The third at round six now hoists Burchell to sixth in the championship and his good his good at the back end of the season.
Burchell finished with 3-2 results at Toowoomba to show he adjusted well to the challenging Toowoomba track.
“I like racing here even though I haven’t always gone well. It’s a tough track to ride with all the ruts, the hills and different traction so I was happy to be able to put two good races together inside the top three and get back on the podium again.”
Just off the podium in forth place but still holding onto the championship lead is Koby Hantis. Only five points separated the top four on the day and Hantis with 2-4 results finished in fourth but had he have been able to get around Jake cannon in the final few laps, things would have been considerably different.
Even when Hantis isn’t winning, he remains consistent with his results and composed in his racing. He has a seven-point margin over Cannon the championship with Drew another four behind in third.
“I didn’t qualify that well this morning and my starts were a bit off today, so I had to work hard to salvage some reasonable results. Being so rutty, I can be hard to pass here sometimes so track position at the start of the race is supper important. I will try and clean those up for the final two rounds and keep doing what I am doing,” Hantis said.
It was a tough day for Kayd Kingsford who finished sixth for the round with 5-8 results. A mechanical issue in practice put him on the back foot and then a crash in moto two also prevented him from showing his best. He is disappointed with his day and determined to make up for it at the final two rounds.
“Tough day for me all round and one I just need to move on from and ensure they I’m good to go for the last two rounds,’ said a disappointed Kingsford.
